anasheed ("Islamic" Songs)
Question:
There has been much said about Islamic Nasheeds. Some will say that they are permissible and some will say that they are an alternative to musical tapes. So what is your viewpoint?
Answer:
This terminology ("Islamic" Nasheeds) is incorrect. This is a new term. There is nothing known as "Islamic" Nasheeds in the books of the Salaf (Predecessor, past generations). Nor will you find anyone from the people of knowledge who agree to this term. It is known that the Sufis are the ones who take the Nasheeds as a deen (religion). So it is what they named them, for the listening. And in our time, due to the numerous groups and sects it has become such that every group or sect has zealous Nasheeds that they call "Islamic" Nasheeds. And this terminology is not correct. Therefore it is not permissible to take these Nasheeds and circulate them amongst the people. And with ALLAH lies success.
