In the Hadith of Jibreel Why Did Jibreel Address the Messenger 'Yaa Muhammad'
In the hadeeth of Jibreel, when Jibreel (alayhis salaam) came and sat in front of the Messenger (alayhis salaam), he said:
يا محمد أخبرني عن الإسلام
So a questioner asked, why did Jibreel address the Messenger (alayhis salaam) in this manner. Does this not constitute disrespect and was it not from the way of the bedouins to speak to him like this?
Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) explains in his commentary that the reason for this was to make the Companions believe he was in fact a bedouin who had come to learn about the religion. Hence, he said, "Yaa Muhammad" and did not refer to the Messenger as "Yaa Rasoolullaah" which was the habit and custom of
those who were around the Messenger. Shaykh Ibn Uthaymin also deduces from this the permissibility of tawriyah (diplomatic, equivocal use of language for a particular goal).
