The Virtues of Fasting ‘Ashura (10th of Muharram)

Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him said:
“For fasting the day of ‘Ashura, I hope that Allah will accept it as expiation for the year that went before.” [Reported by Muslim, 1976]

Ibn ‘Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:
“I never saw the Messenger of Allah, upon whom be peace, so keen to fast any day and give it priority over any other than this day, the day of ‘Ashura, and this month, meaning Ramadhan.” [Reported by al-Bukhari, 1867]

Whistling and Clapping Hands is from Jaahiliyyah

They performed worship by whistling and clapping their hands.

- the explanation -

From the aspects of the Days of Ignorance that the Messenger of Allaah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) opposed them in was their performance of worship to Allaah by means of whistling and clapping. Allaah says:

“And their prayer at the House (Ka’bah) was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands. So taste the torment because of what you used to disbelieve.” [Surah Al-Anfaal:25]

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen on Speaking Slang Arabic (‘Aammiyyah)

Written by: Moosaa Richardson
 in the Name of Allaah…

Many non-Arabs who learn proper Arabic find difficulty in communicating with regular, everyday people. The problem is that common Arabs don’t usually speak a very high level of fus-haa (proper) Arabic, rather they speak ‘Aammiyyah, a lesser grade of Arabic slang. Students of the Arabic Language tend to have a strong stance against the use of this slang, ‘Aammiyyah.

Perhaps the following words from the great scholar, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih al-’Uthaymeen (may Allaah have Mercy on him), may provide some much needed insight into the issue: [1]

Three Points about Joking

In the Name of Allaah, the Most Merciful…

Let us be reminded that while light-hearted, honest joking from time to time is permissible, there are indeed dangers in joking that many of us may not think about and therefore fall into, so let us be warned about them:

1) JOKES INVOLVING LIES

Indeed the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhe wa sallam) warned us severely against using lies in our joking, with his statement:

Hamdan-katheeran-tayyiban-mubarakan-feeh

One day we were praying behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and when he ﷺ raised his head from the position of ruku` (bowing position), he said: “Sami Allahu leman hamidah” – ‘Allah hears the one who praises Him’. A man from behind added:

رَبَّنـا وَلَكَ الحَمْـدُ حَمْـداً كَثـيراً طَيِّـباً مُـبارَكاً فيه
“Rabbanaa wa la kal hamd, hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan feeh”
‘Our Lord, all praise is due only to You, praise which is abundant, excellent and blessed.’

When we finished [the prayer] the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Who spoke?’ The man said, ‘I did’. He ﷺ said,

‘Indeed I saw some 30 angels all scuffling to see which one of them could record it.’

Don’t Be Sure That Your Actions Are Accepted

The noble Shaykh Abdur Razzaaq Ibn Abdil-Muhsin al-Badr (may Allaah preserve them both) stated:

“It is befitting that we make note that the Muslim has no way of being sure that his actions are accepted no matter how well or good he has done in performing the action. Allaah has mentioned, clarifying the state and affair of the complete believers during the performance of actions by which they seek nearness to Allaah from the acts of obedience:

“And those who give that which they give with their hearts full of fear because they are sure they are to return to their Lord.” (Soorah Mu-minoon: 60)

This means that they give from themselves that which they are commanded with from the acts of worship from Salaah, Zakaah, Hajj, Siyaam (Fasting) and other than that. They are in fear that their actions will not save
